Stocks rebound on low volume as earnings reports boost confidence about the pace of economic recovery
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 73 Friday after dropping 94 on Thursday.
Upbeat quarterly reports from Disney as well as Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and J.C. Penney Co. offset worries about a slide in consumer confidence.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 5.96, or 1 percent, to 586.28.
Three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a very light 985 million shares compared with 1.1 billion Thursday.
For the week, the Dow rose 2.5 percent, after jumping 3.2 percent last week. The gains have boosted the Dow's climb for the year to 17 percent.
The S&P 500 index rose 2.3 percent for the week, while the Nasdaq added 2.6 percent.
Crude oil futures finished lower on Friday, and lost 1.4% for the week, after a weak gauge of U.S. consumer sentiment dimmed the outlook for energy demand, while the market still digested news of rising crude supplies.
Copper prices rose as the US dollar resumed a slump, fueling demand for the metal as an alternative investment.
Nickel, heading for its worst week in two months, will decline 8 percent by the end of the year as demand weakens, research group CRU said.
Gold futures finished the session up almost 1% Friday, and gained almost 2% on the week, receiving a lift as the US dollar weakened and on news that Vietnam lifted a ban on imports of the precious metal.
Europe's deepest recession since World War II officially ended today as the world's biggest single trading bloc returned to growth after 15 months of economic retreat. The 16 eurozone countries and the 27-nation European Union as a whole posted collective growth of 0.4 and 0.2 per cent respectively after five quarters of economic decline.
Growth of 0.7 per cent in Germany, Europe's most powerful national economy, and 0.3 per cent in France, lay behind the resurgent eurozone.

A jump in the nation's energy inventories sent stocks falling Thursday as investors worried that demand for oil and gasoline is falling because of the struggling economy.
Major stock indexes slid about 1 percent from 13-month highs, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which fell 94 points after six days of gains. The inventory report from the government pushed crude oil down 3 percent, below $77 a barrel. A gain in the US dollar also weighed on prices for commodities, including oil, by making them more expensive for overseas buyers.
The broader S&P 500 index fell 11.27, or 1 percent, to 1,087.24, after two days of gains. The Nasdaq fell 17.88, or 0.8 percent, to 2,149.02.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 12.39, or 2.1 percent, to 580.32.
Four stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a very loght 1.1 billion shares compared with 1 billion Wednesday.
But stocks could get a boost Friday from The Walt Disney Co., which said after the closing bell that its quarterly profit jumped 18 percent on better results at its movie studio.
Copper prices ended lower on Thursday, weighed down by a slight rebound in the U.S. dollar and growing concerns about demand weakness after London stockpile levels broke above 400,000 tonnes.
Nickel inventories on the London Metal Exchange rose above 131,700 tonnes, the highest since early 1995, driving prices of the metal down more than 5 per cent to their lowest since late July.
Gold futures fell $8 an ounce Thursday to post their first loss this month for the New York floor-session, pressured by a rebound in the U.S. dollar.

Another weak day for the dollar and upbeat economic news from China gave investors more reason to keep buying stocks.
An initial drop in the US dollar lifted gold and oil prices after Federal Reserve officials signaled that borrowing rates would remain low. The market bounded higher in early trading but came off its highest levels as the US dollar pulled off of a 15-month low.
Investors drew encouragement from a 16.1 percent jump in industrial production in China. That fanned expectations that a broader global recovery is gaining steam.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 44 points in light trading after being up as much as 95 points and hitting a 13-month high.
Three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion Tuesday.
Trading was light because of the Veterans Day holiday, but volume has been weak for most of the month.
Copper tracked back from earlier highs late on Wednesday, pressured by dollar fluctuations but boosted by expectations of strong demand from China, the world's top copper consumer, after robust economic data.
Gold jumped to an all-time high Wednesday as the US dollar depreciated, fueling demand for the metal as a hedge against the anemic greenback.

Stocks ended mixed Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrials tacked on 20 points a day after shooting up 200 points for the second time in three days.
The market again took its direction from the US dollar, as it has for months. Stocks drove higher Monday as the dollar weakened and slipped Tuesday as the currency rose.
The Dow swung in a range of about 60 points in light trading as investors increased their buying of safe-haven assets like the dollar and Treasurys.
The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.07, or less than 0.1 percent, to 1,093.01, after six straight days of gains. The Nasdaq composite index fell 2.98, or 0.1 percent, to 2,151.08. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 5.34, or 0.9 percent, to 586.97.
Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.1 billion shares, compared with 1.2 billion Monday.
Oil prices eased Tuesday as workers headed back to deep sea platforms that were bypassed by a rapidly weakening storm in the Gulf of Mexico.
Copper prices were lower in New York on speculation that demand is weakening in China, the world’s largest metals user.
U.S. gold futures ended slightly higher on Tuesday, within sight of fresh record highs, supported by renewed interest by central banks and as the US dollar erased initial gains.

Dow hits 2009 high
A broad U.S. stocks rally sent the Dow industrials to a 13-month high on Monday, after the Group of 20 pledged to keep aid flowing to the world economy, strengthening investors' desire for risk.
The agreement by G20 finance ministers and central bankers over the weekend to keep stimulus in place boosted global stocks on the expectation of prolonged low interest rates.
The U.S. dollar briefly fell to a 15-month low, bolstering commodity prices and materials stocks.
Volume was moderate on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1.24 billion shares changing hands, below last year's estimated daily average of 1.49 billion, while on the Nasdaq, about 2.03 billion shares traded, below last year's daily average of 2.28 billion.
Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of about 5 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, nearly nine stocks rose for every four that fell.
Oil prices shot above $80 a barrel Monday as a weakened U.S. dollar created more turbulence in energy markets than a tropical storm heading into the Gulf of Mexico.
Copper prices rose for the first time in three sessions as the US dollar tumbled and the Group of 20 industrial nations stuck with economic stimulus measures, boosting speculation that metal consumption will increase.
Gold rallied to a record high Monday as the US dollar weakened against rival currencies. December gold rose $5.70 to settle at a record $1,101.40 an ounce, after climbing to an all-time trading high of $1,111.70 earlier in the session.

Arc Exploration Limited (ASX Code: ARX) is pleased to announce that the conversion of the Trenggalek KP to a Mining Business Licence (IUP) has been completed in accordance with the new Indonesian Mining Law.
The Exploration IUP, covering the original KP area of 30,044 hectares, has been signed by the Regent of Trenggalek and is valid for 4 years. This conversion to the new IUP title is in accordance with the Indonesian Mining Law, promulgated on 12 January 2009, which requires the conversion of all pre-existing tenements.
The Company recently announced that it has entered into a strategic alliance with a leading drilling contractor in Indonesia to undertake a 5,000-m diamond drilling program on the Trenggalek Project at its own cost in exchange for shares and options in ARX. Preparations for this drilling are on track to commence early in 2010.
The primary targets of the drilling program are multiple prospects containing epithermal gold-silver-bearing quartz veins, high-level hydrothermal breccias and silica cappings having geological settings and mineralization characteristics analogous to known high-grade gold deposits found along Indonesia's highly prospective magmatic arcs (Eg. Gosowong, Pongkor). Collectively, these multiple prospects represent a series of mineralized epithermal systems with potential to host a major new gold district.
