Stocks move cautiously higher as better jobs picture leads to worries of higher interest rates

Stocks closed higher Friday but only after giving up much of their earlier gains. Indexes touched new highs for year in the morning following news that job cuts fell sharply in November, but that report also brought expectations that the Federal Reserve could hike rates or remove other supports from the economy. Treasurys and gold fell as demand for safe-haven investments eased.

The Labor Department said the economy shed 11,000 jobs last month, the smallest monthly loss since December 2007, when the recession began. That's much better than the 130,000 losses Wall Street economists expected and an improvement from 111,000 jobs cuts in October.

The unemployment rate fell to 10 percent from a 26-year high of 10.2 percent in October.

Jitters about interest rates left the Dow Jones industrial average with a gain of just 23 points, having been up as much as 151 points earlier. Stocks rose for the week.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.6 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion Thursday.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 14.01, or 2.4 percent, to 602.79.

The prospects of increased rates also led to a sharp rise in the dollar, which hurt prices for commodities including oil and gold.

For the week, the Dow rose 0.8 percent, the S&P 500 index added 1.3 percent and the Nasdaq advanced 2.6 percent.

The jobs report weighed on bond prices, pushing yields higher. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell about a point, pushing its yield up to 3.48 percent from 3.38 percent late Thursday.

Copper fell from the highest price in more than 14 months as a stronger US dollar slashed demand from traders who buy commodities as alternative investments.

Gold dropped the most in a year as a rising US dollar prompted some investors to sell bullion on the heels of a rally to an all-time high.

A late-day slide pulled stocks lower ahead of the government's report on November unemployment.

Worries about the economy had been dogging investors following a weak snapshot of the service industry early Thursday. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of activity in the service industry fell to 48.7 in November from 50.6 in October.

However the market drew some support from a Labor Department report that new claims for unemployment benefits fell unexpectedly by 5,000 for the fifth straight week.

Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.1 billion shares compared with 1 billion Wednesday.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 7.31, or 1.2 percent, to 588.78.

Copper fell from the highest price in 14 months after a report showed U.S. service industries unexpectedly contracted last month, spurring speculation that the global economy will be slow to rebound.

PLACEMENT OF RIGHTS ISSUE SHORTFALL

Arc Exploration Limited (ASX Code: "ARX") is pleased to announce that the Company has on 2 December 2009 allotted 48,688,335 shares and 24,344,174 attaching ARXOA options as the first tranche of a placement of the Rights Issue Shortfall.

The shares were issued at the Rights Issue price of 1.8 cents raising $876,390.

The ARXOA options were issued on the basis of one option for every 2 new shares subscribed for. The options are exercisable at 3.6 cents per share at any time until 31 January 2011.

It is envisaged that the remaining shortfall of 27,360,987 new shares (with attaching options) will be placed by the Directors within the next month in accordance with the terms of the Rights Issue as set out in the Company's Prospectus dated 13 October 2009.

Stocks mostly rise as Fed sees improving economy

The stock market struggled but held its ground Wednesday as an upbeat assessment of the economy from the Federal Reserve offset drops in bank and energy stocks.

Most stocks finished higher after the Fed said regional economic activity has generally improved since its last snapshot in October. The central bank also said consumer spending has strengthened even as employment and commercial real estate remain weak.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 6.89, or 1.2 percent, to 596.09.

A mixed reading on the labor market also kept trading subdued. The ADP National Employment Report said private companies cut 169,000 jobs in November, fewer than the number lost in October but worse than the 160,000 cuts expected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters. It was the eighth monthly drop.

A rising US dollar also cooled the market's advance.

Gold prices surged to a new high of $1,218.40 an ounce, while oil prices fell $1.77 to settle at $76.60 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Stocks rise as US dollar slides; reports on housing, construction point to improving economy

Major stock indicators rose more than 1 percent Tuesday, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which rose 126 points and traded above 10,500 for the first time since October of last year.

A weaker US dollar again boosted stocks, a pattern that has played out for months. The cheaper U.S. currency drove up commodities prices and lifted the stocks of energy and materials companies that produce them.

Four stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.1 billion shares compared with 1.3 billion Monday.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 9.47, or 1.6 percent, to 589.20.

Overseas markets jumped as fears eased about Dubai's credit problems.

WALL STREET

U.S. stocks rose modestly on Monday, helping the Dow post its fifth straight monthly gain, on hopes that possible fallout from Dubai's debt woes will be contained.

Shortly before the market closed, Dubai's largest company said its planned restructuring of some units involved $26 billion in debt, easing some concerns about the size of Dubai's financial problems.

Retail shares limited the advance as investors worried that the holiday shopping season might have gotten off to a tepid start. Black Friday data suggested weak sales during retailers' most important sales period and underscored concerns about the economy.

Volume was below average on the NYSE, with about 1.35 billion shares changing hands, under last year's estimated daily average of 1.49 billion. On the Nasdaq, about 2.02 billion shares traded, below last year's daily average of 2.28 billion.

Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of about 18 to 13, while on the Nasdaq, advancing stocks only slightly outnumbered the decliners.

For the month of November, the blue-chip Dow average rose 6.5 percent, while the S&P 500 gained 5.7 percent and the Nasdaq added 4.9 percent.

The US dollar slipped against the euro on Monday as easing concerns about Dubai's debt problems and upbeat regional business activity data in the United States diminished the American currency's safe-haven appeal.

Oil jumped higher today in New York following reports that Iran is holding five British nationals after seizing a yacht.

Copper ended firm on Monday, with prices in both London and New York holding near 14-month highs, as investment funds continued to seek safety in tangible assets such as the industrial metals as a hedge against inflation.

US gold futures ended higher Monday as the US dollar fell further, more than offsetting follow-through weakness and investors' need to raise cash on the back of Dubai's debt woes.
