Stocks stumble again - a day after Dow's biggest plunge - as Europe weighs
The Dow Jones industrials whipsawed again Friday, a day after their largest one-day plunge. The average was down as much as 279 points in the morning, went briefly into the black around lunchtime, then ended with a loss of 139.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17.27, or 1.5 percent, at 1,110.88, while the Nasdaq composite fell 54, or 2.3 percent, to 2,265.64.
Falling stocks outpaced gainers two-to-one on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume was very heavy at 9.5 billion shares, compared with 10.4 billion on Thursday.
The Chicago Board Options Exchange's Volatility Index, used in the market as a “fear” gauge, ended the day 25 per cent higher at 40.95, its highest level since April 2009.
Traders were still anxious amid lingering questions about what caused Thursday's sudden drop. Several possibilities were being investigated but as of late Friday no clear explanation had emerged.
Investors looked past a surprisingly strong report on the U.S. jobs market and focused instead on the latest moves in Europe's spreading debt crisis. The Labor Department reported that employers added 290,000 jobs last month, far more than expected and the biggest jump in four years. However the jobless rate rose to 9.9 percent from 9.7 percent as more people looked for work.
Technology stocks were particularly hard hit following reports that Nokia Corp. was broadening its legal fight against rival cell phone maker Apple Inc. to include the iPad, Apple's new hit product. Apple shares fell 4.2 percent in heavy trading.
Friday's trading left the Dow down 5.7 percent for the week and erased its gains for the year. The S&P fell about 6.4 percent, while the Nasdaq was off 7.9 percent for the week. The S&P and Nasdaq also went into the red for 2010.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies was off 8.9 percent for the week, and the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index fell 834.93, or 6.8 percent, to 11,444.25.
The US dollar was mostly lower against most currencies. The euro clawed back some ground against the dollar after several days of declines.
Oil prices fell for the fourth straight day, following U.S. stocks, as investors remained bearish about Europe's prospects.
Copper showed some resilience in late business on Friday, recouping nearly all of its earlier losses and touching $7,000 per tonne in London, as the euro recovered against the dollar and supply concerns developed in Chile.
Gold spot price hovered around the $1,200 an ounce mark on Friday, after news of the US jobs report was issued, and a holding pattern emerged among gold traders trying to interpret the impact of a plethora of global economic developments.

MINCOR TO RE-OPEN MIITEL NICKEL MINE
But Warns That New Resource Super Tax Will Threaten Future Mine Life Extensions
- Recommendation for immediate re-start of production at Miitel Nickel Mine accepted by Mincor’s Board, with estimated mine re-start costs of less than $1 million.
- Start-up work already underway with underground shifts to start as early as next month and the ramp-up to full production to commence from July 2010.
- Miitel re-start expected to create 100 new jobs and inject more than $130 million into the local and State economy over the next four years.
- Production forecast at 4,500-5,500 tonnes of nickel-in-ore per year during initial 4-year production schedule at life-of-mine cash costs of approximately A$5.50-6.00/lb of payable nickel.
- Mine economics bolstered by inclusion of recent N29 discovery – maiden Ore Reserve of 148,000 tonnes @ 2.7% nickel for 4,000 tonnes of contained nickel metal, which remains open to the south.
- Total Miitel Re-Start Ore Reserve including N29 of 616,000 tonnes @ 2.7% nickel for 16,400 tonnes of contained nickel.
- Project modelling to assess impact of new Resource Super Tax indicates that in a post-2012 tax regime the average tax rate for the life of the project would rise to a deeply unattractive 55%.
- Any mine-life additions, which Mincor is confident could be achieved, would be fully exposed to the new Resource Super Tax and would be uncertain to meet Mincor’s investment hurdles. - Web Site

BASS METALS (BSM)
Operations Update - All Activities on Track
This operations update [ASX Report – 7 May 2010] is to confirm to our shareholders that notwithstanding negative external factors, including the proposed Resource Rent Tax (RRT), Bass remains in a strong position.
It needs to be stressed that through the recent past GFC, Bass’ Que River Mine production cash flows enabled the Company to continue business and indeed grow its asset base. I’m not suggesting that we are heading toward GFC MkII, but it is a possible analogy to our present situation and something Mr Rudd and his cabal should appreciate in terms of Australia’s mining industry.
Digressing for a moment on the new RRT; Bass is a member of the Minerals Council and AMEC and will be supporting those industry organisations in their lobbying efforts against this tax. We are also ensuring that our own work force comprising over 100 people now – all understand the truth of what is being presented and appears to be resonating with the broader community, namely:
- The RRT is not comparable to the Resource Rent Tax levied on the petroleum industry – it is fundamentally different and hence harsher, aside from the fact that the oil industry receded for c.10 years after its imposition.
- Super profits appear to be a return in excess of what one would receive on a 10 Year Bond rate i.e. 6%. Would you accept that performance from your superfund? How does an essentially riskless rate compare to real investment risks that mining investors face? How fascinating to hear Finance Minister, Lindsay Tanner last night on the ABC news referring to investment in the new broadband network “as being worthwhile, whilst perhaps not generating a commercial rate of return .....it should provide a return around the 10 Year Bond rate” (I paraphrase slightly). Is it commercial or not – and for miners a return in excess of the 10 year bond rate is a super profit!
- The proposed RRT is planned to be levied in conjunction with Corporate Tax giving an effective tax rate on miners of around 57%.
I believe these clear messages need to be broadcast to the wider electorate because frankly these are issues of truth, whereas emotive rhetoric, whilst entertaining does not appear to be influencing broader public option and frankly the various statistics being debated between Miners and Govt are causing "working Australian family’s” eyes glaze over.
So I would like to think that each person working with our company will be motivated to become an informed advocate for the mining industry’s opposition to this new unfair tax.
Back to Bass Operations update - Bass currently owns 100% of two high grade low cost mining projects; one in production and the second coming on line in the September quarter 2010. These assets provide Bass shareholders exposure to significant robust, cash flow whilst our highly prospective land position, with two drill rigs testing targets provides exciting exposure to exploration upside. This is part of a planned long-term growth development. - Web Site

Rio Tinto restarts iron ore expansion programme in Canada with US$400 million investment
Rio Tinto has announced the re-commencement of its expansion programme in its Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations. The Board of IOC has approved new investment of US$401 million (Rio Tinto share US$235 million) to increase its annual concentrate capacity by four million tonnes to 22 million tonnes by 2012.
The investment is the first stage of a three-stage expansion programme at IOC that could increase concentrate annual capacity to 26 million tonnes. It was initially approved in March 2008 but suspended later that year as the global financial crisis impacted markets worldwide.
IOC Chairman and Rio Tinto chief executive, Iron ore Sam Walsh said the decision highlighted the degree of confidence in growing demand for iron ore, the attractiveness of investing in Canada and the quality and potential of IOC’s assets. - Web Site

WALL STREET
Panic Eases as Dow Drops 3% After Plunging Nearly 1,000 Points
The Dow plunged nearly 1,000 points -- a new intraday record -- before rebounding as investor worries mounted that Greece's debt problems could spread. Trading was volatile, though the New York Stock Exchange said there were no system errors during the brief but heavy sell-off.
Stocks plunged 9 percent in the last two hours of trading on Thursday before clawing back some of the losses as the escalating debt crisis in Europe stoked fears a new credit crunch was in the making.
The Dow suffered its biggest ever intraday point drop, which may have been caused by an erroneous trade entered by a person at a big Wall Street bank, multiple market sources said.
Indexes recovered some of their losses heading into the close but equities had erased much of their gains for the year to end down just over 3 percent, the biggest fall since April 2009.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancers on the New York Stock Exchange by more than 17 to 1. Volume soared to it highest level this year by far.
Nasdaq said it was investigating potentially erroneous transactions involving multiple securities executed between 2:40 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 347.80 points, or 3.20 percent, to 10,520.32. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 37.75 points, or 3.24 percent, to 1,128.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 82.65 points, or 3.44 percent, to 2,319.64.
The sell-off was broad and deep with all 10 of the S&P 500 sectors falling 2 to 4 percent. The financial sector was the worst hit with a fall of 4.1 percent.
Selling hit some big cap stocks. Bank of America was the biggest percentage loser on the Dow, falling 7.1 percent to $16.28. All 30 component of the Dow closed lower.
An index known as Wall Street's fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index closed up more than 30 percent at its highest close since May 2009. It had earlier risen as much as 50 percent.
The mounting fears about a spreading debt crisis in Europe curbed the appetite for risk and put a report of weak U.S. retail sales into sharper relief. Most top retail chains reported worse-than-expected same-store sales for April, sparking concerns about consumer spending, the main engine of the U.S. economy.
Oil prices on Thursday dropped to levels not seen since February, as the stock market plummeted.
Benchmark crude lost $2.86 to settle at $77.11 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil hit $73.71 on Feb. 16 and has lost almost $10 a barrel since Monday.
Gold surged past the psychologically significant $1,200 mark on Thursday as stock markets plummeted and investors sought a safe haven.

Update on Zijin`s Takeover
Indophil Resources NL supports today’s announcement by Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, China’s largest gold producer and third largest copper producer, of an extension to its A$1.28 per Indophil share cash offer until Friday, 9 July 2010.
The Indophil Directors note that the takeover process is taking longer than originally anticipated, largely due to the extended process required by Zijin in obtaining the necessary approvals from Chinese Regulatory Authorities.
Indophil and its Philippine partners worked closely with Zijin to host a Tampakan Project site familiarisation visit last week for Chinese officials.
The site visit provided officials with the opportunity to discuss the project with various Philippine government representative groups, local community representatives, local project staff and Xstrata as lead manager for the world-class Tampakan Copper-Gold Project. Indophil is optimistic that the visit will lead to Zijin obtaining the necessary approvals from the Chinese Regulatory Authorities. - Web Site

BANG NOUAN-1 EXPLORATION WELL UPDATE
Operational Update
Bang Nouan-1 Suspended Ahead of Testing
Salamander Energy plc, the Asia focussed independent oil and gas exploration and production company, provides an operational update on the Bang Nouan-1 exploration well in the Savannakhet PSC, Lao PDR.
The well has been drilled by the MB Century 26 rig to a total depth of 3,400 metres and logging has been completed. Gas shows were observed in the secondary objective, the Triassic-age Kuchinarai sandstones, between 2,020 metres and 2,120 metres. Preliminary analysis of the log data indicates the presence of up to 25 metres of potential net gas pay.
In the primary objective, Pha Nok Khao carbonate formation, zones of permeability were encountered below 3,300 metres but these zones were found to be water bearing.
The Bang Nouan-1 well has now been suspended ahead of a drill stem test of the Kuchinarai clastic section. The testing programme will be carried out using a workover rig that is expected to begin mobilising to site shortly. The MB Century 26 rig has been de-mobilised.

RESOURCE DRILLING TO COMMENCE - BRAZIL
Beadell Resources Limited (“Beadell”) is pleased to announce that yesterday a 20,000 m drilling contract has been signed with Cougar Metals NL’s 100% owned Brazilian subsidiary Geologica Sondagens Ltda for the Company’s recently acquired Brazilian Gold and Iron Ore Project. Drilling will commence next week with three diamond rigs and one reverse circulation (RC) drill rig operating on double shift over an initial four month period.
The drilling is primarily designed to convert Inferred Resources at the base of the current optimised pits to Indicated status for completion of an open pit mining Reserve as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS). Current optimised open pit resources are 26.3Mt @ 1.45 g/t for 1.2Moz of gold of which 82% are already in JORC Measured and Indicated resource status.
The three main deposits of Urucum, Tapereba AB and Tapereba C form a continuously mineralised structure over a > 7km north-south strike length (Figure 1). All the deposits remain open at depth with excellent potential to increase resources with ongoing drilling. - Web Site

Visible Gold and Rock Chip Assays Confirm Kandia Gold Target - Drilling to Commence
Castle Minerals Limited (ASX:CDT) is pleased to announce that rock chip sampling of the Kandia gold prospect located within the Company's Wa Project in north west Ghana has reported visible gold and strong gold results up to 16g/t gold confirming the Kandia gold workings as a high priority exploration target.
Castle's Managing Director, Mr Mike Ivey, said "The extensive Kandia artisanal gold workings provide us with an immediate drill target, we obviously have gold, it's just a question of how much. In addition, the workings highlight a new prospective granite/sediment contact over some 25km that has never been explored."
RC drilling is proposed to commence at Kandia mid May, with an initial program of approximately 2,500m aimed at testing beneath the areas of artisanal workings. - Web Site

DSO and Iron Ore Exploration Update
Magnetic Resources continues to advance its iron ore exploration across its tenement holdings.
WUBIN
Within the Wubin project area, exciting assay results have been reported for initial rock chip sampling follow-up of the regional aeromagnetic surveys.
Outcrop within the area is very limited and occurs mostly as laterite duricrust or lateritized outcrops; as such, from the 118 assays received, 40% of samples contain greater than 40% Fe with a maximum value of 59.5% Fe (range 1.53-59.5 % Fe). The field identified Fe species including hematite, goethite and limonite as shown by Figures 1 to 4.....
JUBUK
Magnetic is awaiting statutory approvals to re-commence drilling at the Jubuk prospect with the aim of defining the initial area to inferred resource standard and to commence drilling of the Target 2 (ASX release 5 January 2010). Detailed ground magnetics and modelling of the target have been completed. A total program of approximately 3500m of RC drilling is proposed.- Web Site

Stocks extend decline on European debt worries
The stock market extended its slide Wednesday after investors couldn't shake their concerns about European countries' big debt loads.
The Dow Jones industrial average ended down about 59 points to put its two-day drop at 284. The Dow halved its loss by the close but finished off its high of the day. Treasury prices rose and pushed down interest rates in the bond market for a second day.
A drop in the euro and a rise in the US dollar continued to adversely affect markets around the world.
Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.3 percent, Germany's DAX index dropped 0.8 percent, and France's CAC-40 fell 1.4 percent. In Greece, the main stock index fell 3.9 percent. Portugal's PSI 20 lost 1.5 percent and Spain's main index fell 2.2 percent.
Investors fear that if a tourniquet for Greece's financial problems doesn't hold, it would be harder to help larger countries like Spain and Portugal that also face big deficits. Moody's Investors Service warned on Wednesday that it could cut Portugal's credit rating two notches in the next three months. Standard & Poor's cut Portugal's credit rating last week.
About four stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.5 billion shares, in line with Tuesday.
Oil prices plunged Wednesday as a stronger US dollar, fueled by widespread fear of Europe's sovereign debt woes, lessened the appeal of buying crude. Crude oil fell $2.77 to $79.97 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Palladium and copper futures were bearing the brunt of commodities sell-off on Wednesday. Palladium for June delivery retreated $25.40, or 4.9%, to $489.85 an ounce. Copper for July delivery retreated 15 cents, or 4.8%, to $3.02 a pound, hitting a three-month low.
Comex gold futures closed higher and nearer the session high Wednesday, as the bulls once again took advantage of a downside price correction to do some bargain hunting and "buy the dip".

These shipments will take place while Atlas accumulates a substantial ore stockpile for the new Utah Point port facility at Port Hedland as we work to start exports from Utah later in the year. - Web Site

STUART PETROLEUM
Oil Production Back on Stream
Oil producer Stuart Petroleum Limited (ASX code: STU) wishes to advise that is has resumed oil production and exports from several of its Cooper/Eromanga Basin oilfields following the completion of repairs to rain-affected access roads to the Worrior, Padulla and Harpoono oilfields.
Rain-affected road conditions disrupted oil production in the Cooper Basin for much of the March Quarter and April. Stuart is preparing a claim for recompense under the terms of its Business Interruption Insurance policy and the Company’s insurance underwriters have appointed a loss adjuster to review its claim.
Stuart is targeting production of around 0.19 million barrels of oil in financial year 2010, increasing to around 0.3 million barrels of oil in financial year 2011. These forecasts take into account the impact of rains experienced during the March Quarter. - Web Site

Antares is pleased to announce surface casing was successfully cemented in the Frances Dilworth No. 4H at a depth of 4,966 ft. The Nabors M34 rig is now preparing to drill ahead with a planned encounter with the Eagle Ford shale at approximately 10,900 ft. At this point, a 4,000 ft lateral will be drilled within the Eagle Ford until reaching a measured depth of approximately 14,900 ft.
At the Frances Dilworth No. 3H, a coiled tubing unit was utilized to prepare the wellbore for Halliburton’s arrival. Additionally, the first stage of the upcoming 14 stage fracture stimulation was perforated. Five perforated clusters, two feet in length, comprise the Stage 1 perforated interval.
Site construction is nearing an end at the Frances Dilworth No. 5H location and the crew will then move to begin site construction of the Frances Dilworth No. 6H location. Surveyors are preparing to stake the Frances Dilworth Nos. 7H and 8H, and locations for the remainder of the 2010 drilling program are being finalized. - Web Site

Spinout of non-core uranium assets into Eclipse Uranium IPO
I am writing to update you on the significant developments that have transpired at Cauldron Energy Limited, and to highlight the Company’s recent decision to divest our non-core uranium assets in the Northern Territory.
The formation of Cauldron Energy Limited via the merger of Scimitar Resources Limited and Jackson Minerals Limited created an asset rich uranium exploration company. Since this merger, the Company has been engaged in a process of divestment or sale of both non-uranium and non-core exploration ground. This strategy has enabled Cauldron to focus financial and technical resources on its key uranium assets in Australia and Argentina. The Directors believe by channelling the Company’s resources to the exploration of core projects, maximum value will be returned to shareholders in the short to medium term.
As you may be aware, on 5 March 2010 Cauldron announced to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) that it planned to divest its non-core uranium assets held in the Northern Territory of Australia via a spin-out into a new Initial Public Offering, Eclipse Uranium Ltd (Eclipse). The agreement between Cauldron and Eclipse is subject to Eclipse being granted permission to list its securities on the ASX before 31 July 2010.
The divestment will deliver to Cauldron a significant share holding and board representation in a cashed-up entity that has the sole focus of exploring and developing uranium exploration ground in the Northern Territory. A successful listing of Eclipse on the ASX will give Cauldron 25,000,000 shares in the company, equating to a holding of between 20% and 33% depending on the amount raised from the Initial Public Offering.
Eclipse will have a large landholding, having already acquired exploration assets from Dourado Resources (see ASX:DUO announcements dated 5 March and 23 April 2010). These exploration projects are well positioned in fertile uranium provinces, and are relatively un-explored for uranium, despite their prospectivity and the Northern Territory being a major focus for uranium exploration in Australia. - Web Site

LEE COUNTY PROJECT – DRILLING UPDATE
Buccaneer Energy Limited (“Buccaneer” or “the Company”) is pleased to provide the following operational update.
The Vick # 2 well spudded at approximately 8.30am Thursday 29 April 2010 EST.
The well was drilled to 1,100 feet where 9 5/8" casing was set. The well is currently at 4,900 feet and drilling ahead. The plan is to drill approximately 100 feet into the Austin Chalk (~5,200 feet), run wireline logs, and then set 5 1/2 " casing. The Nikolas # 1 rig will be released at that time.
The horizontal rig currently sitting at the Vick # 1 location will then move onto Vick # 2 well and continue to drill the vertical "pilot" hole through the Lower Austin Chalk ("LAC") and the Eagleford Shale whereupon these formations will be evaluated with open hole logs. The total depth for the well is estimated to be 6,100 feet.
The objective is to further study the oil production potential of the Eagleford Shale for future drilling and testing as well as to refine our Vick # 2 horizontal target drilling in the LAC. The Vick # 2 horizontal drilling operations in the "high graded" LAC interval will then commence. - Web Site

MEO AUSTRALIA
Letter to Shareholders
Given the important developments within MEO over the past several months, I felt it would be helpful to set out your Board’s perspective on what has been achieved and what the future might hold for your Company.
Over the past year, the MEO executive team has been fully engaged in securing the best possible arrangements to maximise the value of our interest in exploration permit WA-360-P. As you already know, our exploration team has identified the Artemis Prospect with the potential to host mean prospective resources of approximately 12 Tcf (100% basis), sufficient for a stand-alone LNG project.
In late 2009, we secured our 70% interest in WA-360-P by undertaking to fund 100% of the cost of drilling the Artemis-1 exploration well and raised sufficient additional funds in November 2009 to underpin that commitment. It was always MEO’s intention to secure a farminee who would agree to fund that exploration drilling in return for a share of our 70% interest in the permit.
In early April, we announced that Petrobras, Brazil’s semi-public multi-national energy company, had agreed to farm into WA-360-P. Given that this transaction represented a new county entry for Petrobras, there was a need for extensive due diligence on their part which took considerable additional time to conduct.
Petrobras also requested that MEO put in place arrangements which would assist in the orderly development of a major gas project in the event that drilling at Artemis-1 would be successful. Given Petrobras’ technical and financial strength, its independence from the established majors in the Western Australia gas industry and the attractive terms of the farmin, MEO was keen to settle these additional requirements and complete the farmin.
Upon receipt of Australian regulatory approvals including Foreign Investment Review Board approval, Petrobras will fund the cost of the Artemis-1 exploration well to a cap of US$41 million and will pay MEO approximately US$39 million including a cash bonus and seismic related back costs. Petrobras will take a 50% interest in the permit. If Artemis-1 is successful, Petrobras will make another US$31.5 million cash bonus payment and carry MEO through the drilling of a further two wells to a cap of US$62 million each. .... - Web Site

Rio Tinto concerned about new resources tax
Rio Tinto today warned the new resources tax announced by the Federal Government could erode Australia’s competitiveness, severely curtail investment and limit jobs growth.
Rio Tinto managing director Australia David Peever said the final design and implementation of the additional resources tax was crucial to ensuring unintended consequences didn’t filter through to other sectors of the national economy.
“We are concerned about the inclusion of existing operations and the apparently arbitrary way the new resources tax was set at 40 per cent. Taxing 40 per cent of profits over the long-term bond rate, together with corporation tax, would make the Australian minerals sector the highest taxed in the world, seriously eroding competitiveness,” Mr Peever said.
“And just as importantly, altering the rules for existing multi-billion dollar projects in mid stream - after large amounts of capital have already been put at risk over many years - would be the worst possible message Australia could send to investors.”
Mr Peever rejected suggestions that the Australian community was not extracting a fair return from the growth in the mining sector, noting the industry already pays more tax than other parts of the economy.
“All Australians benefit from a strong mining sector. In the same way all Australians are affected by measures that hurt the mining sector. Australia was saved from the worst of the GFC by the strength of the resources sector, but the same industry is now being portrayed by the Government as not paying its way.
“Periods of high commodity prices also give the industry the capacity to invest through the cycle and to return value to ordinary shareholders. Across commodity price cycles, Rio Tinto has maintained its strong record of investment in Australia for more than a generation, expanding its business and creating wealth for shareholders and the broader Australian community.”
Rio Tinto, like other mining companies, continues to deliver a wide range of local and regional community benefits that are not recognised in the basic taxation statistics. Investments in local infrastructure and agreements made with indigenous communities, for example, are provided on top of mining royalties and company taxes.
Rio Tinto will continue to keep its shareholders and customers informed about issues of concern regarding particular aspects of the Government’s tax proposals, Mr Peever said.
“Rio Tinto is not opposed to tax reform. We support genuine tax reform that protects against sovereign risk, improves the competitiveness of the resources sector as an investment destination and promotes economic growth,” he said.
“We will comprehensively analyse the potential impact on our business of all of the Government’s proposals and want to play a proactive, constructive role in the consultation process outlined by the Government.” - Web Site

Stocks tumble as new doubts about Greek aid emerge
Stocks plunged around the world Tuesday as fears spread that Europe's attempt to contain Greece's debt crisis would fail. The euro fell to its lowest point against the dollar in a year. Investors are worried that other cash-strapped European governments could also ask for emergency loans while the economy of the entire region is still recovering.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 225 points, its biggest drop in three months. The slide erased a 143-point gain from Monday. The Dow and broader indexes each fell more than 2 percent. Meanwhile, Treasury prices rose on increased demand for safe investments.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 23.12, or 3.2 percent, to 709.70.
The Chicago Board Options Exchange's Volatility Index, which is known as the market's fear gauge, soared 18 percent. That is a signal that more investors are betting on big drops in the market.
About six stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.6 billion shares, compared with 5 billion Monday.
Britain's FTSE 100 and Germany's DAX index each dropped 2.6 percent, and France's CAC-40 tumbled 3.6 percent. Greece's main index fell 6.7 percent, while Spain's Ibex 35 index lost 5.4 percent. Portugal's PSI 20 fell 4.2 percent.
Crude oil fell $3.45, or 4 percent, to $82.74 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange due to the economic fears and the stronger US dollar.
Most commodities fell.
A surging U.S. dollar index and sharply lower crude oil prices put some downside price pressure on the gold market Tuesday, as prices closed moderately lower.

TANAMI GOLD
TANAMI GOLD NL UNVEILS 105% INCREASE IN CENTRAL TANAMI GOLD RESOURCE TO 1.06Moz
DOUBLING OF GOLD RESOURCE PROVIDES ADDITIONAL CONFIDENCE IN PROPOSED RESUMPTION OF MINING OPERATIONS
Australian gold producer Tanami Gold NL (ASX: TAM) is pleased to report a 105% increase in the Mineral Resource for its recently acquired Central Tanami Project [“CTP”] in the Northern Territory to over 1 million ounces of gold, providing additional impetus to its plans to restart production next year.
Tanami Gold has completed this key re-estimation of gold resources within the CTP within two months of acquiring the Project from Newmont Mining Corporation, applying a more relevant gold price and current mining and milling costs.
The CTP is expected to become a new production hub for Tanami Gold alongside its existing Western Tanami Operations (currently producing 50,000oz pa). The CTP includes the 1.2Mtpa Central Tanami treatment facility, extensive infrastructure and a world-class 2,100 sq km exploration package.
The new Resource estimate was completed based on mineralisation contained within the CTP Mineral Leases only and has resulted in a 105% increase in Measured, Indicated and Inferred Resources to:

URANIUM SA
CO-FUNDING FOR DRILLING UNDER THE
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT PACE PROGRAM
PRESENTATION TO THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN
RESOURCES & ENERGY INVESTMENT CONFERENCE
At the South Australian Resources & Energy Investment Conference in Adelaide on Monday
PIRSA announced the successful applicants for funding under their current PACE exploration
incentive program. UraniumSA has been granted co-funding for a drilling program to investigate
the geochronology and mineralisation of the uranium rich granite which underlies the sediment
hosted uranium of the Mullaquana Project.
The Company has already completed the geophysical surveys which are required to target the
holes and this data is being interpreted. Drilling of the PACE co-funded holes will be
incorporated into the already announced round of contracted drilling which is scheduled to
commence later in this June quarter.
The primary objective of this contracted drilling is to complete the drill out of the Blackbush
Prospect and newly discovered extensions to enable an updated resource statement to be
completed. The results of the PACE co-funded drilling will be announced along with the other
results as they become available in the course of this program. - Web Site

WEST WITS MINING
Final assay results from Elder and Monarch drill programs
- Elder Target and the Monarch pit area were drill tested to define additional gold mineralisation potentially amenable to open cast extraction to provide an additional source of mill feed to the Emerald Gold Project (EGP)
- West Wits is pleased with these assays results as these grades and widths continue to demonstrate the opportunities that still exist for near surface economic mineralisation within the West Rand Goldfield.
- The initial part of the Company’s business plan is to develop a number of open pittable opportunities to provide cashflow before developing the more substantial deeper underground opportunities
- Initial drilling at the Elder Target has defined reef positions and intersected significant gold values
- Final Monarch Pit drill assays continue to define high grades near surface 1km along strike from the EGP
- Significant intersections include:
Elder
• 0.75m @ 14.47g/t Au from 45.03m in WRCMD02
• 3.47m @ 5.31 g/t Au from 50.32m in WRCMD04
• 1.83m @ 3.30 g/t Au from 70.23m in WRCMD05
• 1.07m @ 4.06 g/t Au from 15.28m in WRCMD14
Monarch
• 3.44m @ 2.83 g/t Au from 55.56m in WRCKD43
• 3.51m @ 2.75 g/t Au from 34.08m in WRCKD44
• 0.93m @12.64 g/t Au from 50.34m in WRCKD45

WALL STREET
Investors sent stocks soaring Monday after getting a boost of confidence from the latest economic reports and Warren Buffett's defense of Goldman Sachs.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 143 points for its biggest gain in two and a half months. The Dow and broader indexes all climbed more than 1 percent.
The market rebounded from a drop Friday after a string of welcome news eased some of the concerns that have been dogging investors. Economic reports signaled that consumer spending and manufacturing are strengthening.
Meanwhile, Germany's approval of bailout funds for Greece and Buffett's vote of confidence in Goldman, whose shares he owns, helped reassure investors.
About three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5 billion shares compared with 6.3 billion Friday.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 16.22, or 2.3 percent, to 732.82.
Solid upside near-term bullish technical momentum outweighed the bearish specter of a stronger U.S. dollar index Monday, as gold futures scored modest gains while reaching another fresh five-month high. June gold closed up $2.60 an ounce, at $1,183.30. Gold market bulls are now setting their sights on pushing prices above psychological resistance at $1,200.00 an ounce.

BHP BILLITON (BHP)
BHP Billiton Disappointed with New Australian Mining Tax
BHP Billiton today expressed its disappointment with the Australian Government's plan to impose a new resource rent tax. The imposition of this new tax would result in an increase in the total effective tax rate on the Group's profits earned from its Australian operations from around 43 per cent currently to around 57 per cent from 2013.
Multi-billion dollar, long-term investments in the Australian resources sector have contributed significantly to the prosperity of all Australians. In the last three years the resources sector has contributed 18 per cent of Australia's GDP, is the largest contributor to Australian export revenues at 42 per cent and has been the largest contributor to corporate tax revenues. Much of the profit in the sector has been re-invested in resource and infrastructure projects in Australia. A key factor underpinning the decisions behind these investments has been Australia's reputation for providing a stable and competitive taxation regime... - Web Site

Tui SW-1 Exploration Drilling Update
The Operator, AWE Limited, reports that the Kan Tan IV drilling rig started drilling at 1000 hours on May 2nd, 2010. At 0600 hours today (NZ time), the well was at a measured depth of 1,505 metres, where 13-3/8” casing was being run and cemented, as planned. This is the first of two exploration wells which will both be drilled close to the Tui oilfield in PMP 38158, in the offshore Taranaki Basin.
The Tui SW-1 well will evaluate the Kapuni F10 Sand, the oil bearing reservoir in the Tui oilfield, and has a planned TD of approximately 3900m. At the conclusion of drilling the well will be cased and suspended as a possible future gas injection well. A successful discovery would likely be developed by low-cost tie-back to the existing Tui facilities.
It is planned to drill the Kahu-1 well, the second well in the program, immediately following Tui SW-1.
